O-Sensei Phil Porter’s Coaching
Record
Introduction. I have
dug into the records to give you the best account possible of the
champions I produced during the 31 years from 1961 to 1992. After
that I concentrated on competing in the World Masters Championships
and on building the U.S. Martial Arts Association (USMA). Then, in
2009 I began coaching athletes in Mixed Martial Arts.
Note that during
the final years of the National Judo Institute (NJI) Team program in
Colorado (1989-1992), many fine athletes asked if they could come
and train with us at the NJI for various periods of time. If they
won national or international gold, silver, or bronze medals while
they were training with us and being coached by me, I have included
those medals in the detailed list starting in 1984 of the NJI medals
won.
I have not
included state champions in this list. I have produced about 2,000
of them over the past 50 years.
Note that I may
have made errors in the exact titles of some of the events listed in
this record. That is to be expected.
The first section
of this record spans the 22 years from 1961 to 1984, when I built
the NJI and started the NJI National Judo Team there. I have set
down this 1962-1984 list from memory, so please excuse and bring to
my attention any errors you may find.
National and International Medals Won
Before the NJI (1962-1984)
In 1961 I became
Head Judo Coach at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs,
Colorado. The next hear, 1962, with Yosh Uchida, I founded the
National Collegiate Judo Association (NCJA), wrote its constitution
and by-laws, and hosted the first U.S. National Collegiate Judo
Championships at the Air Force Academy. I remained there for three
years (1962-1964). Our USAFA team took third place in the
collegiate nationals each of those years. I have estimated that we
won 30 national medals over those years.
In 1963 I won a
bronze medal in the AAU National Championships in Fresno,
California, and then in 1966 Gene Bailey of the Air Force Judo Team
I coached, won a bronze in the Nationals in New Jersey. That
brought the total of national medals to 32.
In 1972 (as I
remember) I was coach of the U.S. Air Force Team to the world CISM
Games (the world military Olympics). There Paul Maruyama took a
gold medal and we also took four other medals, bringing the total p
to 37.
I coached the Air
Force Team in the Olympic trials of 1972, which were the same as the
Nationals. We took eight medals, including those by John Watts, Jim
Wooley, Paul Maruyama, Rene Zeelenberg. My total then rose to 45.
For the Olympics,
we traditionally score the first eight places as medals won. Jimmy
Wooley, a student of Karl Geis in Houston, came to us in Sacramento
in 1972, at Karl’s request, to prepare for the Olympic Trials (the
second one). Jim won the trials and placed 5th in the
Munich Olympics, adding two medals to the total (now 47).
1972 was a big
year. I build and opened the All American Judo Club (Zenbei—a name
invented by Ben Campbell in 1953) in Sacramento and we started a
wonderful Junior Judo Team. For the next seven years, through
1978, we were always one of the top three junior teams in the
Nation. Johnny Loomis, Todd Wagner, Reggie Shamberger, and a host
of other great kids won just about everything in sight. John
Loomis, by the time he was 12 years old, had won 13 national and
world gold medals in Judo and Wrestling. He was World Schoolboy
wrestling champion three years in a row.
We averaged 60
national and international medals per year in the USJA, USJF, Junior
Olympic championships, plus the Northwest Championships and the
Canadian National events. These 420 medals brought the total to
467.
I was Air Force
Coach several times during this period and we took 20 national and
international medals, including those in the 1975 World Games
trials, and the World and CISM Games. The total was now 487.
In about 1989 a
fine young man, Lubor Jarolimek, who trained at several clubs,
including the NJI, went to the National Collegiate Championships. I
was too busy to attend, but he called me before the finals to tell
me he was facing a great young Judoist, Denny Augustine, in the
finals that evening. Knowing Augustine’s style, I gave Lubor a good
game plan, and thus, only once, did I coach a national gold medalist
by telephone! That brought the total to 488 won. That medal is not
included in the total listed below.
I should also
include the four national gold medals I won in the masters during
the period 1975-1981, and the two gold and one silver taken in the
World Masters in 1998. The total was then 495.
Darleen Hill, won
three national medals and also an international medal in the British
Open during about 1978 to 1981. These four bring the total to 499.
We can’t forget
the great Bonnie Korte, who won the gold in the first women’s
nationals, and the 145 pound gold and grand championship in 1975 in
Los Angeles. Her total of at least 11 national and international
(gold and silver in the British Open) brings the total to 510.

The incredible record of America's Judo
Team at the National Judo Institute (NJI)in the first seven years
and four months after its founding is listed on the following
pages. This record has never been equaled by any Judo club in
America. The San Jose State College Judo Team (under the great
college coach Yosh Uchida may have won more medals over many years,
but I don’t believe this seven year record can be approached by any
other Judo team.

The grand
total is 996 national and international medals won.
When we add the total of 510 national and international medals won
before the NJI Team got into action in 1984, to the 486 we won at
the NJI, we come up with a grand total of 996 national and
international medalists I produced in the 31 years from 1961 to
1992. As you may know, I use the figure of 1,000 medals won by
athletes I’ve coached. I believe this 996 total is quite
conservative, and feel the total is indeed well over 1,000. There
are bound to be champions that have slipped my memory. You can
guess that in my 86th year (in 2010), some of those
golden memories have slipped away.
If you take a minute to crunch those
numbers a little, you come up with some interesting facts. There
were 372 months in that 31 year coaching span. A thousand medals
won means that for those 31 years, during each one of those 372
months, I produced on the average, month after month, without fail.
nearly three national or international medalists (2.69, or 2.68
of you use the 996 total) every single one of those 372 months.
The memory of all those great athletes,
many hundreds of them, is still fresh in my mind. I am grateful to
them all for trusting me as a coach and giving so completely of
their best effort. Working with them, especially Kate Donahoo, Jim
Wooley, Dar Hill, Rene Zeelenberg, Bonnie Korte and Johnny Loomis,
was my reward; but to all of them I owe my love and thanks.
You are always in
my heart,
O-Sensei Philip
